The Government of Guyana yesterday officially commissioned its Biotechnology Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) compound, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. The state-of-the-art laboratory, established in partnership with the Government of India and supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), is designed to produce up to one million disease-free, high-quality plantlets each year. The new lab will play a key role in strengthening Guyana’s food security, supporting crop diversification, and boosting productivity across the farming community. Delivering the feature address, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha described the commissioning as a “momentous milestone in Guyana’s agricultural journey.” He said the lab represents a major leap in the country’s efforts to integrate biotechnology into farming and food production.
