ANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images Billie Eilish‘s fragile, love-soaked song, “Birds of a Feather,” almost didn’t take flight. In a new interview, the singer revealed that she nearly tossed out the single from her Hit Me Hard and Soft track list after considering it to be “kind of stupid.” When speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Eilish shared that she and Finneas, her brother and frequent collaborator, had difficulty landing the chorus — particularly when delivering the line, “I’ll love you till the day that I die.” After wrapping the track, which stands out among her more moody offerings, Eilish still wasn’t completely behind it. “Multiple times I was like, ‘We should cut this,’” Eilish told WSJ. “Even when I played the whole album for the label, I was like, ‘Guys, this one is kind of stupid.’” Trending Stories How Quentin Tarantino Turned the Manson Family Into Tomorrow’s Movie Stars Pierre Robert, Philadelphia's Voice of Rock Radio, Dead at 70 Busta Rhymes Honors ‘Godsend’ D’Angelo on New Tribute Track ‘Magic’ Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham Are Back on Speaking Terms Despite her initial hesitation, “Birds of a Feather” would feature on her third studio album and become one of the most inescapable hits of the summer. The single reached Number Two on the Billboard 200 and topped the Billboard Global 200 for three weeks. Spotify also declared the track to be its most-streamed song of 2024 and the track garnered Grammy nominations for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Elsewhere in the interview, Eilish discussed the music industry’s initial doubt that her introspective, more somber (and at times devastating) songs wouldn’t appeal to a wide audience. “It’s so funny to think back on all of the criticisms that were like, ‘The songs are too sad,’” she said, adding then when penning “Birds of a Feather,” she slipped in “something dark” so it wasn’t solely “rainbows and smiles.” The musician added, “We wrote about the idea that you’re going to die soon, and let’s make it last.” 'The Storm Feels Personal': Jamaica’s Reggae Community Grapples with Melissa's Aftermath Trenchtown Relief David Browne Pierre Robert, Philadelphia's Voice of Rock Radio, Dead at 70 Joseph Hudak Kendrick Lamar's 'Luther' Departs Hot 100, Leaving No Rap Songs in the Top 40 for First Time in 35 Years Larisha Paul Katseye Talk Lottery Dream Buys, Fashion, and Instagram Stalking on ‘Role Roulette’ Pointing Fingers Larisha Paul Drake Launches Appeal, Hopes to Revive Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG Notice of Appeal Nancy Dillon Go to PMC.com Most Popular Jennifer Lawrence Says She Was 'Annoying' in Old Interviews and Gets Why the Public 'Rejected' Her Personality: 'I Lose Control Over My Craft When I Have to Do Press for a Movie' 'Dancing With the Stars’ Crowns Dance Marathon Winner as One Contestant Suffers an Injury on Halloween Night: See the Scores, Who Went Home Sarah Ferguson & Prince Andrew May Flee the UK for This Country, Experts Theorize How Shohei Ohtani Made $102 Million in 2025 You might also like Aly Raisman on the Power of People and Pets in Variety Courage Award Acceptance Speech: ‘Hope Grows When Communities Show Up’ 4 hours ago Giada De Laurentiis’ Italian Cowboy Caviar Is Going to Be Your New Favorite Easy Holiday Appetizer 3 hours ago WWD Honors Gala Celebrates Fashion Icons, Industry Leaders and Trailblazing Brands 3 hours ago Sales Out of the 2025 Fall Festivals: Rock & Roll Rom-Com ‘Mile End Kicks’ with Barbie Ferreira Lands at Record Label Sumerian’s Film Banner 3 hours ago NIL Firm Blueprint Sports Tries Whistling Past the Wreckage 3 hours ago Rolling Stone is a part of Penske Media Corporation. © 2025 Rolling Stone, LLC.
