Bengaluru to get 80,000-seat international cricket stadium in Anekal

Bengaluru (Karnataka): The Karnataka government has given in-principle approval for the construction of a massive new international cricket stadium near Bengaluru, aimed at creating a world-class sports hub. The stadium, set to be built in Anekal, around 40 km from the city, will have a seating capacity of 80,000 and is part of the state’s ambitious plan to upgrade sports infrastructure. Location and project scope The stadium will be constructed on 75 acres at Suryanagar Fourth Stage Extension, Indlavadi village, on Bengaluru’s outskirts. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil stated that the Housing Department has been tasked with preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and conducting a viability study. The project, expected to cost approximately Rs 2,350 crore, will feature facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports alongside a 3,000-seat auditorium. Once completed, it is projected to become one of India’s largest sports complexes, capable of hosting national and international sporting events. Why a new stadium? The decision comes after concerns about Bengaluru’s existing M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which accommodates only 38,000 spectators. Safety and crowd management issues were highlighted following the June 4 stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory match. The investigation commission recommended that major events be relocated to safer venues, prompting the need for a modern and larger stadium. Karnataka’s broader sports infrastructure push Housing Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan said the new stadium in Anekal will be Karnataka’s third international cricket venue, joining facilities in Mysuru and Tumakuru. The state government aims to decentralise sporting events from Bengaluru and enhance overall sports infrastructure across Karnataka. Officials highlighted that the new stadium would not only provide safety and scale but also meet global standards, reinforcing Karnataka’s ambition to host high-profile international sporting events. Experts believe the stadium could also stimulate regional development, generate employment, and boost tourism in the Anekal area. With world-class facilities, an expanded seating capacity, and multi-sport infrastructure, the Anekal stadium is set to redefine cricket and sports in Karnataka. The government’s focus on safety, accessibility, and modern amenities is expected to make it a landmark destination for players and fans alike.
