Anime was just beginning its journey to pop-culture ubiquity in the 1980s, so it's a little surprising the medium has never meaningfully crossed over with the decade's enduring symbol of Back to the Future. A new officially licensed figure, however, bridges the gap between Back to the Future and anime with a crossover that makes a surprising amount of sense. As revealed by Essential Japan, Back to the Future is crossing over with the hit anime and manga series Tokyo Revengers for a new figurine. The figurine features the iconic Tokyo Revengers character Mikey dressed in Marty McFly's costume from the first Back to the Future film. The figurine will be given out as a prize in Sega arcades to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Tokyo Revengers anime and the 40th anniversary of the original Back to the Future film. In addition to the Mikey figure, plushies depicting Takemichi, Mikey, and Draken dressed as characters from Back to the Future will be given out. Back to the Future's Tokyo Revengers Anime Crossover Actually Makes More Sense Than It Appears While the crossover might seem random to an outsider, it actually does make a good deal of sense. Tokyo Revengers centers around a young man named Takemichi who travels 12 years back in time to prevent the death of his former girlfriend and her brother. As a result of his time travel, Takemichi joins the Tokyo Manji gang, where he becomes closely associated with its leaders, Mikey and Draken. Despite Similar Themes, One Thing Is Still Off About Back To The Future's Tokyo Revengers Crossover While the theme of time travel unites both Tokyo Revengers and Back to the Future, what makes this specific crossover just a bit strange is the choice of Mikey to represent Marty McFly. Mikey is a morally complicated figure and is far from the main character. Takemichi slots much more cleanly into Marty's main hero role, and is also the one who mostly does the time traveling in Tokyo Revengers, so it's unclear why Mikey was chosen to be the face of the crossover. Regardless of the crossover's logic, though, it's difficult to argue that it doesn't look great. Mikey has a striking character design, and he looks great wearing Marty's iconic outfit from Back to the Future.
