The Chief of Atwima Kwanwoma, Nana Amponsah Kwaa IV, has hailed the directive for the compulsory use of Ghanaian local language in all educational environments as a ‘victory for education’. As a staunch advocate for this educational reform for years, the traditional leader welcomed the announcement as fulfilling. “This is what I have always fought for! It’s a dream come true; a victory for culture, for education, and for every Ghanaian child,” the chief said in an interview. Commending the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for the initiative, he emphasised that this will improve and enhance teaching and learning activities, unlocking students’ true potential by helping them better grasp concepts and actively engage in lessons. “When a child understands the language of instruction, knowledge flows easily. This policy will shape a new generation of confident, culturally rooted Ghanaians.” At the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities initiative in Accra last week, Hon Iddrisu announced that the use of Ghanaian mother-tongue instruction is now compulsory in schools across the country. “I am directing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the GES that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools,” Mr Iddrisu declared.
