Local police arrested a man at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning who was allegedly planning a mass shooting. As reported by ABC7, the suspect had intended to use an assault rifle that was later found inside his pickup truck to injure and kill as many people as possible, but was thwarted thanks to a tip. The arrest came after airport and city officials, in coordinated response, escalated security and conducted searches around the implicated terminals once the tip was verified. Authorities seized the rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition in the suspect's pickup truck, which was parked outside the airport terminal. While the attack was thwarted, this represents one of the most concerning attempts to attack an airport in recent times. Cagle's family became concerned about his words and actions, and subsequently sent a tip to the Cartersville Police Department. Cagle is a convicted felon and is not legally allowed to purchase firearms, raising questions as to how he came to possess one. Police found an AR-15 assault rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition in his Chevrolet pickup truck, and reportedly, Cagle is being charged with making terroristic threats, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He had livestreamed on social media and announced that he would go to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to "shoot it up". This prompted his family to contact local police, who would meet him at the airport. Surveillance footage shows Cagle entering the terminal and then proceeding to take a high degree of interest in the TSA check-in line. This is perhaps the most crowded area of the airport before passing through security. Officers then approached him and questioned him. Afterwards, Billy Joe Cagle was arrested by the officers.
