Astronomical amount it cost climate warrior Mike Cannon-Brookes to fly his private jet around the world is revealed Atlassian pays for use of private jet The aircraft belongs to boss Mike Cannon-Brookes READ MORE: Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes makes huge life change By CAITLIN POWELL - NEWS REPORTER Published: 10:35 BST, 22 October 2025 | Updated: 11:33 BST, 22 October 2025 The company founded by climate crusader Mike Cannon-Brookes paid $5.7million in the 12 months to July to fund the globe-trotting travel of the billionaire's private jet. Atlassian shareholders bear the brunt of the bill for the running costs of the $75million Bombardier 7500 jet, which Cannon-Brookes bought following a recent split from his US-based ex-wife Annie. The new figures, declared by the company this week in stock market filings and reported in The Australian, follow it earlier being revealed the aircraft had travelled almost the equivalent of flying to the moon and back last year. From August 2024 to the end of July, the mogul took 90 flights across 43 airports, covering roughly 440,000km, it has been reported. Analysts estimate the carbon dioxide emissions from Mr Cannon-Brookes' flights would be enough to power a town of 2,400 homes for a year. 'I'm not denying I have a deep internal conflict on this,' the tech entrepreneur told his followers on social media back in March. 'Personal security is the primary reason (an unfortunate reality of my world), but also so I can run a global business from Australia, and still be a constantly present dad. 'So, this is a hard, continual trade-off I've decided to make.' Billionaire climate warrior Mike Cannon-Brookes (pictured with ex-wife Annie Cannon-Brookes) has been reimbursed for his company Atlassian to use his multimillion-dollar jet Atlassian's proxy statement to the US stock exchange revealed the jet has been of use to company staff after signing a charter agreement to use Mr Cannon-Brookes' Bombardier 7500 According to Atlassian's proxy statement to the US stock exchange on October 15, the jet has been rented by the company, with a steep fee paid to Mr Cannon-Brookes to charter the aircraft. 'In fiscal year 2025, we paid approximately $US1.9 million [AU$2.9million] to an entity affiliated with Mr Cannon-Brookes,' the report said. The cost was a reimbursement for operational costs on the private plane belonging to the billionaire. The fees were incurred before Atlassian entered a charter arrangement with an independent operator for business travel primarily by Cannon-Brookes. 'We pay a pre-determined rate per flight hour which, following a review of market data, we determined is below the market rate for a similar aircraft,' the report said. With this deal, the company faced costs totaling about $US1.8million [AU$2.7million] for business travel on the jet - with almost all payment received by Cannon-Brookes as the aircraft's owner. 'Due to the fact that the pre-determined rate we pay for the use of the private aircraft is less than the actual operational costs incurred, Cannon-Brookes does not profit from this arrangement.' Atlassian confirmed the reimbursement and charter agreement itself were authorised by an audit committee. '(It) believes these transactions provide (Atlassian) with substantial value because our cost is less than the cost we would incur if we were to charter a similar aircraft from another operator at market rates or... own and operate our own aircraft.' Mr Cannon-Brookes opened up in March about his 'challenging' decision to purchase the jet following a messy split from his US-based ex-wife Annie Mr Cannon-Brookes has long been an avid climate warrior, previously backing Australia's biggest solar farm Sun Cable and encouraging daily diets to be expanded to include insects Billionaire climate warrior Michael Cannon-Brookes reveals surprise reason for buying private jet The report highlighted Cannon-Brookes' role as CEO benefits from the arrangement with regard to his 'safety, security, efficiency, privacy, confidentiality, flexibility, and productivity'. Atlassian prides itself on its efforts towards climate change goals, boasting on its website that it has achieved its goal to run operations on 100 per cent renewable electricity, starting in fiscal year 2020. As an individual, Cannon-Brookes has long been an avid climate warrior and has previously backed Australia's biggest solar farm Sun Cable. He became AGL's largest shareholder in 2022, purchasing an 11 per cent stake to pressure the company into accelerating its move to renewable energy. The mogul then used his influence to block AGL's proposed demerger, which would have extended the life of its coal-fired power plants, and publicly called AGL 'one of the most toxic companies on the planet' due to its high carbon dioxide emissions. Cannon-Brookes also warned the world needs to change eating habits by adding insects to its daily diet if there is hope to feed a global population of eight billion. The Daily Mail has contacted Atlassian regarding the company's decision to charter a private jet rather than use commercial airlines.
