Delaying breakfast for too long also slows down digestive enzymes. “By the time you eat, your enzymes are sluggish, leading to bloating and a slower metabolism. Starting your day with refined carbs or sugary foods. “White bread, packaged cereals, and biscuits digest too quickly, causing a spike and crash in blood sugar levels,” warns Dr. Batra. This rollercoaster effect not only leaves you craving more sugar but also slows metabolism. A better option, she suggests, is to build a balanced plate with whole grains, protein, and a moderate amount of healthy fat. Try oats with nuts, eggs with multigrain toast, or poha with veggies. These combinations support smooth digestion, provide steady energy, and keep your metabolism humming through the morning. Forgetting Fibre And Hydration Even if you eat breakfast on time, skipping fibre and water can still slow down digestion. Dietitian Vidhi Chawla, Founder of FISICO Diet and Aesthetic Clinic, explains, “Fibre acts like a broom for your gut. It keeps food moving and feeds the good bacteria in your intestines. But many common breakfasts lack it completely.” Her fix: add fruits, vegetables, or seeds to your morning plate. “Think of a smoothie bowl with spinach and flaxseeds, or a vegetable dal chilla. These choices are light yet fibre-rich,” she suggests. Chawla also highlights the importance of hydration. “Overnight, your body loses fluids, and starting your day dehydrated makes digestion sluggish,” she says. A glass of warm or infused water before breakfast can help activate digestive juices and prepare the stomach for food. A healthy morning routine isn’t just about what you eat, but it’s also about when and how. Eating breakfast within an hour of waking, choosing fibre-rich and balanced foods, and staying hydrated are small but powerful steps for better digestion. Skip the sugary cereals and empty calories, and instead, build a breakfast that nourishes your gut, stabilises your metabolism, and keeps your energy steady throughout the day.
