Viral claims on social media on Wednesday alleged a mass walkout within the New York Police Department (NYPD) following Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor. The claims were amplified by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and Republican congressional candidate Sholdon Daniels, among others, but so far, no evidence supports them. Stefanik wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “@KathyHochul’s catastrophic endorsement of the Defund the Police pro-Hamas Mayor has caused a MASSIVE walkout of NYPD officers,” calling Mamdani a “Commie” and blaming New York’s governor for “destroying the city.” Daniels echoed her statement, posting, “Massive walkout at NYPD.” No Evidence of an NYPD Walkout Despite the viral claims, there is no confirmation of any NYPD walkout. Neither the police department nor police unions have issued statements to corroborate the reports, and no credible media outlets have reported such an event. Based on available information, the rumors of a mass walkout appear to be false. What’s Actually Happening While no NYPD officers have resigned en masse, Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker, a Jewish official appointed under Mayor Eric Adams, did resign just hours after Mamdani’s victory, citing personal and ideological differences. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has reportedly indicated she is willing to remain in her position under Mamdani, provided she retains authority to continue her policing agenda. Tisch, who has avoided engaging in electoral politics, said in a statement, “It is not appropriate for the Police Commissioner to be directly involved or to seem to be involved in electoral politics.” Mamdani, a democratic socialist and vocal advocate for police reform, has pledged to redefine certain NYPD responsibilities but has also sought to ease tensions with law enforcement since his campaign. His previous comments describing the NYPD as “racist” and “anti-queer” resurfaced during the campaign, prompting him to publicly apologize.
