Apple's Self-Service Tools For The M5 iPad Pro Bump Up Its Repairability Score

iFixit has just published a nearly 6.5-minute video on YouTube on the repairability metrics for the new Apple M5 iPad Pro, concluding that the device remains one of the least repairable hardware products from Apple, but the new self-service tools do manage to boost its overall repairability score. iFixit: "At just 5.1mm thickness, it's thinner than an iPhone Air, which means the screen is mounted flush against the internals" iFixit has noted the following about the new M5 iPad Pro: The screen is mounted flush against the internals. Battery replacements still entail the removal of the "huge, fragile screen" of the iPad Pro. The display is connected to the rest of the device via adhesives without any intervening screws. Screen removal entails heating the adhesives to weaken their bonds and then using a clamp and wedged picks to pull out the display. Apple has taken some steps towards improving the repairability of the M5 iPad Pro by furnishing a self-repair manual. The spare parts for the new iPad Pro should become available in the coming months. On the whole, iFixit has pegged a 5/10 provisional repairability score to the new M5 iPad Pro. The M5 iPad Pro is brimming with raw power On the plus side, as we noted recently, the device is brimming with raw power. The M5 SoC within Apple's newest Pro-edition iPad is an absolute beast. To get an idea, just take a look at device-specific M5 specifications: CPU 6 efficiency cores clocked at 2.95 GHz 4 performance cores clocked at 4.60 GHz 16 MB L2 cache GPU - The M5 within the new iPad Pro sports a 10-core GPU, with a dedicated Neural Accelerator in each core, which allows for processing machine learning tasks directly at the silicon level. A 16-core Neural Engine. RAM - 16 GB of LPDDR5X unified memory clocked at 4.8 GHz, offering a memory bandwidth of up to 153 GB/s. Connectivity - C1 modem chip, N1 wireless networking chip In fact, Apple's new M5 chip is nearly as fast as its workstation-class M1 Ultra chip.
