The Hoops job has become available after Brendan Rodgers resigned on Tuesday (AEDT) with Celtic eight points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts. Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has been placed in charge in an interim capacity; however, Postecoglou is considered a favourite to become Rodgers’ permanent replacement. Postecoglou guided the Hoops to five trophies across two seasons before leaving them to join Spurs in 2023. After leading Spurs to Europa League glory, Postecoglou was sacked by the English Premier League club in June. Three months later the former Socceroos coach was back in the EPL after being appointed by Forest. However, after just 39 days in charge, Postecoglou was axed earlier this month, having failed to lead Forest to a win in eight games across three competitions. Slater has urged the former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory manager to take a break from coaching and not rush into another job. “He needs a rest, and he needs to take his time and choose his next job carefully,” Slater said. “Taking the Celtic job now would just be jumping from one disaster to another. “He deserves to coach in a bigger league – he’s done the Scottish league. He went to the biggest league (the EPL), it didn’t exactly work out, but he did win a big European trophy, and that attracts interest from Europe.” Postecoglou has also reportedly been linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus, who sacked their manager Igor Tudor on Monday after a run of eight games without a win in all competitions. “So soon after what happened at Forest, I’d be very surprised if a club like Juventus go for Ange,” Slater said. While Slater believed Postecoglou should not return to Celtic, former Hoops star Chris Sutton felt it would be a match made in heaven. “I think Ange Postecoglou would be a really smart appointment,” Sutton told Sky Sports. “He was loved the first time round, his brand of football went down well in Glasgow, (and) he’s out of work. “I think he would be a pretty obvious choice, a good choice, and bring a lot of positivity back to Celtic, which they need right now.”
