All’s Fair Director Anthony Hemingway Defends Kim Kardashian-Led Show

Watch: Sarah Paulson Calls Kim Kardashian's Character a "Whore Lawyer" in ‘All’s Fair’ TrailerAnthony Hemingway is calling for order in the court. The All’s Fair director defended the Hulu legal drama—which stars Kim Kardashian, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Paulson, Teyana Taylor, Glenn Close, and Naomi Watts as divorce lawyers—over the negative reaction the show has garnered since its Nov. 4 premiere. “You’re not going to please everybody,” Anthony, 48, told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Nov. 5. “You may have certain criticisms, while there are a million others who love it. I think the show holds a mirror up to each person who watches it. It’s just about: Can you connect to it or relate to it, and see yourself?” He continued, “It may be out of your league, it may not be anything you can connect to, and I think that goes for anything that gets presented on screen.” In the three-episode release, Kim (who stars as lead attorney Allura Grant), Naomi (Liberty Ronson), and Niecy (Emerald Green) open their own all-female law firm and settle numerous divorce cases. But instead of traveling to a courtroom, the trio investigate—and ultimately win—these suits in the comfort of their conference room, dressed in their finest couture.readWhat Glenn Close Really Thought of Costar Kim Kardashian's Acting in All's FairHowever, many critics weren’t a fan of the series marrying legal jargon with high fashion. Shortly after the premiere, All’s Fair received a zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and some described the script as “unforgivably dull.” But despite the low ratings, Anthony—who also executively produced the show alongside Ryan Murphy and Kris Jenner—understands that viewers engage with “entertainment” and “comedy” differently. Edward Berthelot/WireImage“It’s a matter of finding ways to tap into real conversations and real human dynamics in a different way,” he continued in the interview. “It may not be for you, and that’s OK, but I personally enjoy the show. I had a lot of fun relating to it in my own way. Not everything is for everybody, and you can’t also expect one person to define something and for that to be the totality of what it is. I don’t agree with that.” In fact, the director believes that art “may take time” to grow on an audience. And as the show continues to premiere their first season, Anthony wants viewers to keep this approach in mind. “Don’t come at it with such a critical or literal frame of mind,” he added. “It strikes a different tone, and it will evolve over time; it will get more human.” Keep reading to see more TV shows that have released this year… Food Network/Warner Bros.
