BY VALENTIA TETTEH The Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has confirmed that six people have died and several others sustained injuries following a stampede during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. Briefing Parliament, Dr. Forson said the recruitment process, which was decentralised to ease congestion and ensure transparency, was suspended in Accra after the tragic incident. “The recruitment process in Accra has been halted pending further notice, and an internal board of inquiry has been instituted to investigate the incident,” he told the House. According to him, five individuals are currently in critical condition and receiving intensive care, 12 are in fairly critical condition, and 28 others were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment. The Ministry of Defence has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the incident. Dr. Forson emphasised that the Ministry prioritises the safety and dignity of all applicants and will take steps to prevent a recurrence.
