Dr. Seuss’ original manuscript and cover sketch for Sing the 50 United States! were discovered earlier this year in the archives of UC San Diego’s Geisel Library, according to a press release from Penguin Random House. Sing the 50 United States! is the first full Dr. Seuss manuscript to be discovered since the posthumous release of What Pet Should I Get? in 2015. According to the renowned publishing house, Sing the 50 United States! incorporates all of the “signature rhymes, rhythm, and wordplay,” that Dr. Seuss—born Theodor Geisel—was known for including in his books. “SING THE 50 UNITED STATES! invites readers to learn and name all fifty states together with the iconic Cat in the Hat and two Little Cat helpers,” the press release states. “To sing the 50 United States, you have to use your brain. Massachusetts. Minnesota. Missouri and Montana. M-i-s-s-Mississippi. Maryland! Michigan and Maine!” The new book will also include “excerpts and sketches from Geisel’s original manuscript” as well as a map of the United States beneath the book jacket. Dr. Seuss not only left behind the complete text for Sing the 50 United States!, but he had also made a sketch of the cover and made notes on the “overall art direction” for the book. Staying true to his style, Dr. Seuss’ vision was completed with brand-new illustrations by popular children’s book artist Tom Brannon.
