A Kalamazoo homecoming: The Gilmore names inaugural managing director

KALAMAZOO, MI — The Gilmore announced this past week that Kelly W. Waltrip will join the Kalamazoo-based piano and arts organization as its inaugural managing director. Waltrip will assume the role on Jan. 1, 2026, the organization announced. A 2003 graduate of Western Michigan University’s music program — where she studied piano — Waltrip returns to the organization where she launched her career. The former Bronco spent a year as an operations assistant for The Gilmore before going on to build an extensive resumé working in nonprofit management and arts administration. Waltrip has spent the last 11 years as the executive director for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. Since 2018, she has also served as the managing director of the alliance between the Colorado Symphony and Denver Young Artists Orchestra. Prior to that, she served as general manager of the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky and spent time with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In her role at The Gilmore, Waltrip will work closely with executive director Pierre van der Westhuizen, helping to support the nonprofit’s strategic direction and long-term vision, said April Thibeault, spokesperson for The Gilmore. “I am honored to join The Gilmore at such an exciting time,” Waltrip said. “As The Gilmore prepares to present its annual (previously biennial) Gilmore Piano Festival, I look forward to working with the team and community to build new audiences and strengthen relationships with our current ones.” In her time in Colorado, Waltrip is credited with guiding the Denver Young Artists Orchestra to new levels of growth and national recognition through unique collaborations, commissioning and recording initiatives, and Pathways initiatives. At The Gilmore, she will be integral in strategic planning and cultivating community partnerships in local, regional and international markets, Thibeault said. “We are thrilled to welcome Kelly W. Waltrip to The Gilmore family,” van der Westhuizen said. “She brings a dynamic combination of leadership, creativity and strategic insight that will expand our impact. “Her passion for music and connecting people with transformative musical experiences will be a huge asset to our team.” In addition to serving as second in command behind van der Westhuizen on special projects and initiatives, Waltrip will have oversight across all departments, including development, education, finance, operations, marketing and public relations.
