9 Sci-Fi TV Show Settings We Want To Live In

While sci-fi is one of the most versatile TV genres of all time, with a wealth of locations and settings, there are very few that we would want to live in. Many of the best action scenes in sci-fi TV shows tend to involve large-scale interplanetary wars, and even the more grounded and low-budget shows are often set in a dystopia. The best sci-fi TV show settings of all time may be exciting, but they are not always welcoming. That said, there is great potential in sci-fi for beautiful and expansive worlds that we would like to live in, though even when the greatest sci-fi franchises show us glimpses of exciting worlds, they rarely stay there for long. The Desert Love, Death + Robots Netflix's cyberpunk anthology masterpiece Love, Death + Robots is an exciting and ambitious series that gives viewers new worlds to explore with every episode. The dreamy and visually stunning episode "Fish Night" may not be the best episode in Love, Death + Robots, but it has the most inviting world to live in, provided you stick to the rules. "Fish Night" follows two stranded salesmen who spend the night in the desert. As night falls, the spirits of the sea creatures that once inhabited the land come to life, mesmerizing the younger man, who goes for a swim and finds himself in the jaws of a predator. If the two had stayed by the car and simply watched, the experience would have been unforgettable. Eureka Eureka Unlike many serious sci-fi shows, Eureka is based on a series of mishaps, making it stand out as a great show for people who love quirky sci-fi. The hidden town of Eureka is home to scientific geniuses, and each episode deals with a technological mistake or accident. This makes living there exciting and unpredictable, but rarely dangerous. When accidents happen in many sci-fi series, they often trigger an apocalypse. However, Eureka is a much more lighthearted sci-fi show, and the episodes regularly involve time travel and robots. If the town were real, it would likely be fun to live in, with very few dull moments and plenty of people ready to step in and help to put things right. Patience Resident Alien The isolated and fictional town of Patience, Colorado, is visually stunning, with winter sports, restaurants, and a cozy bar to hang out in. The only possible issue is that the town's doctor is an odd character. Resident Alien stars Alan Tudyk in his best role, as a shapeshifting alien who assumes the identity of the small town's doctor and ends up in a murder investigation. Many sci-fi shows that are set on Earth involve people reacting badly to the presence of aliens. However, many members of Patience's human population accepted Harry's strange behavior even when they assumed he was human. Even after being outed as an alien, many still become Harry's friends and allies, making the town a reassuringly welcoming place to live in. Delvia Farscape The planet Delvia is one of the most exciting in Farscape, with the main Delvian species being a form of humanoid plant life. We first learn about the planet through Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan, who was an anarchist turned priest. While we do not see much of Delvia, we are told the society is a largely peaceful one, written to resemble Buddhist values. Except for the trouble that informs Zhaan's plotline in Farscape, the inhabitants of the planet Delvia value spirituality, meditation, and connection. That said, the Delvians are not helpless, as Zhaan explains to an enemy who calls her soft and weak, responding, "soft, yes. Weak, no." With its peaceful ideals and ability to defend itself, Delvia seems like a great sci-fi location to live in. Serenity Firefly The iconic spaceships in sci-fi tend to be masterpieces of innovation and technology, resembling cities in space, with a few home-like areas for the main characters. The Firefly-class vessel Serenity stands out from other spaceships for its coziness, which extends beyond the homes of the main characters. Each of the inhabitants has personalized their space, from the engine bay to the pilot's controls. The characters in Firefly visit other planets, but Serenity is the heart of the show and the place of safety that they all return to. The show was a short-lived sci-fi masterpiece for its ensemble cast and their family-like dynamics, and Firefly did a great job of making its viewers wish that they were part of the crew living on Serenity. Gallifrey Doctor Who Doctor Who's planet Gallifrey is the home of the Time Lords, and one of the most majestic locations in the sci-fi genre. The location is such a beloved place in the series that Doctor Who keeps retconning Gallifrey's destruction to allow it to regenerate, remaining part of the show's mythology. The planet is especially beautiful and home to an interesting ecosystem. Gallifrey is extremely distinctive, and while we have seen remarkably little of it in the Doctor Who series, its thriving plant and animal life has been described. The planet has a warm orange color, silver trees, and a wide range of different creatures living on it. Given its many protections and regenerations, Gallifrey seems like an intriguing place to live and explore. Las Vistas Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts After the world's animals mutated into anthropomorphic creatures that rose up against the human population, Los Angeles was left as a post-apocalyptic wasteland populated with the new "wonder beasts" also known as "mutes." The city, now called Las Vistas, is the setting for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and while this new landscape could be dangerous, it is also extremely fun. Sharing a world with exercise-obsessed raccoons, lumberjack cats, mafia frogs, and plenty more animal factions would be exciting. While some of Kipo's many mute factions are less than friendly to humans, the series is about the different groups finding common ground and partnership with the human population, leaving the world a better place that we'd love to live in. San Junipero Black Mirror "San Junipero" is one of the few Black Mirror episodes with a happy ending that few people saw coming. The episode is centered on a love story between two women who meet while testing out a virtual reality program where people can live in a digital afterlife. San Junipero allows people to inhabit their younger bodies forever, in a resort town. While living in San Junipero is not for everyone, it is easy to see why Yorkie would want to, having been deprived of the use of her body in life. The idea of living in a body that cannot be harmed and reliving the best times of your life sounds appealing, and while Black Mirror usually has a dark twist, "San Junipero" did not. The Federation Star Trek Star Trek's United Federation of Planets is arguably the closest setting to a utopia in any sci-fi TV series. The characters live in a society in which there is no hunger or scarcity, as there is no money. As replicators can make just about anything from raw energy, there are no greedy billionaires hoarding wealth and no underclass of desperate people in poverty. The Federation values all species equally, guaranteeing both civil rights and due process for all, which eliminates the issues plaguing the modern day. Star Trek is already one of the most progressive and optimistic TV shows of all time, and The Federation shows an ideal world that would benefit everyone, no matter their sex, race, or physical ability level.
