42nd Anglican Provincial Synod to be hosted in The Bahamas

The 42nd Triannual Anglican Provincial Synod of the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI) will be hosted in The Bahamas for the first time in 24 years. Led by Senior Bishop, The Right Reverend Philip Wright, bishop of Belize, and senior bishop of the Province, the Synod will be attended by other bishops and the clergy and lay delegates from across the Province who will meet in sessions November 8-13 at Breezes Resort on Cable Beach. Along with Wright, the bishops expected to attend include Rev. Laish Boyd, bishop of the Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands; Rev. C. Leopold Friday, bishop of the Windward Islands; Rev. Claude Berkeley, bishop of Trinidad and Tobago; Rev. Charles Davidson, bishop of Guyana; Rev. Michael Maxwell, bishop of Barbados; Rev. Ernest Fleming, bishop of the North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba; Rev. Leon Golding, bishop of Jamaica and The Cayman Islands; Rev. Alfred David, suffragan bishop of Kamarang in the Diocese of Guyana; Rev. Garth Minott, suffragan bishop of Kingston in the Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands; Rev. Errol Brooks, retired bishop of the North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba; Rev. Gilbert Thompson, retired suffragan bishop of New Providence and assistant Bishop of the diocese. The opening service of the Provincial Synod will be held on Sunday, November 9, at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral. The Pontifical Concelebrated Eucharist will begin with a pre-service at 4:30 p.m. featuring the 60-voice University of The Bahamas choir. A 30-voice combined choir will provide music during the liturgy. Business sessions of the Synod will begin on Monday, November 10, with the election of a new Archbishop for the Province. There are eight dioceses in the Province. The Synod is held every three years. Each diocese hosts the Synod every 24 years. The last time the Synod was held in The Bahamas was in 2001, with sessions at Holy Trinity campus, Stapledon Gardens. The Provincial Synod comprises about 70 people and includes diocesan and suffragan bishops, two clergy delegates, two lay delegates, and one youth delegate along with provincial officers (secretary, chancellor and registrar).
