3M India’s Electronics division aims for 5x growth in India over three years

3M India’s Electronics arm aims to grow its Indian business fivefold over the next three years. Dr Steven Vander Louw, President of 3M Display & Electronics Product Platforms, told businessline that the division is expected to be a major accelerator over the next five years. “We’re going to try to go to 5x in three years with high double-digit growth,” he said. 3M India’s overall revenues currently stand at over ₹4,000 crore, and the company works with over 200 companies in the country. He views India as a significant growth opportunity for both domestic and export markets. “With major cell phone makers bringing their assembly to India and design centres moving to India, we see leading designs emerging from India. So, it’s going to be really exciting.” India’s mobile phone manufacturing has grown considerably over the past decade, from meeting only 25 per cent of domestic demand in 2014-15 to reaching ₹4.1 lakh crore ($49.27 billion) in FY24, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF). India now ranks second for both Samsung and Apple in smartphone assembly share, as per S&P Global Ratings. Recently, London-based smartphone maker Nothing signed a joint venture with Optiemus Infracom to expand manufacturing in India. The company recently opened an electronics customer experience centre in Bengaluru, housed within 3M India’s R&D Centre in Electronics City. The experience centre is part of deepening 3M’s presence in the electronics business in India. The facility enables customers to explore, test and co-develop customised solutions while showcasing 3M’s diverse electronics portfolio, including conductive materials, thermal management solutions, semiconductor materials, electronics abrasives and bonding solutions. The growth opportunity spans consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices and semiconductors. 3M India currently employs more than 1,200 people in the country.
