Global Desk Nutritionist Robbie Puddick told the Daily Mail that hearty soups can help your body fight colds and flu. He said soups “support the immune system” because they’re easy to digest and full of nutrients. Puddick explained that soup helps people with common gut issues and poor digestion since it provides “really bioavailable nutrition.” He said proteins and plant-based compounds in soups are easier for the gut to break down. However, he warned that store-bought soups “are often packed full of sugar,” and advised making them fresh so you “know exactly what’s in them.” There’s something comforting about soup, and science backs that up. After the COVID-19 pandemic, a 2022 study looked at traditional Iranian folk soups like chicken and barley, as per the report by Daily Mail. The study found that people who ate soup got better 2.5 days faster than those who did not eat it.They had less cold problems like blocked nose, sore throat, and tiredness. Some people also had less body inflammation, showing that soup helps in healing. Soup ingredients like garlic, onion, and ginger have antioxidants that fight germs. They also have vitamins A and C that make the body strong. Warm soup helps clear mucus and calm a sore throat.Soup #1: Hungarian Goulash – The Hearty Immunity HeroThis traditional Hungarian dish dates back to the ninth century, first made by shepherds cooking over open fires. The recipe evolved over time, with paprika added after the Ottomans brought it to Hungary in the 15th century. Live EventsGoulash includes garlic, which Puddick calls “a big win” because it contains allicin, a compound that boosts immune cell activity. He said, “If we’re having garlic regularly across the week and we put a large amount in our soups, it is definitely a big win”, as per the report by Daily Mail. The soup also includes Greek yoghurt, which adds probiotics that help the immune system and support gut health.Puddick added that probiotics are linked to stronger immune function. A 2011 study found probiotics can help prevent common colds by stimulating the immune system. Other research shows that a healthy gut microbiome supports digestion, immunity, and even mental health. Puddick recommends making fresh tomato soup at home to control ingredients. This soup is rich in vitamin C, which helps strengthen your immune system. He said getting vitamin C from food is better than supplements since food offers “the right balance of vitamin C and zinc.” Tomato soup alone can leave you hungry because it’s low in protein. Puddick said, “It’s probably because they haven’t provided their body with enough protein alongside it”, as per the report by Daily Mail. His version adds cannellini beans for extra protein. Vegans can swap cream for coconut milk for a creamy texture. Main Ingredients: Olive oil, carrots, onion, garlic, tomatoes, cannellini beans, stock, cream, basil.Cooking Steps (Simplified):Sauté vegetables, add tomatoes, and cook to reduce acidity.Add beans and stock, simmer for 10 mins.Blend with cream or coconut milk, top with basil. Puddick said, “A lot of herbs and spices have anti-inflammatory properties.” He said that inflammation is not always bad because it helps the body heal.
