16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence: WPC decides to engage with legislatures, civil-society

ISLAMABAD: The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) decided to engage actively with provincial legislatures and civil-society partners to ensure a broad-based participation and broaden the impact of the WPC campaign. The WPC was held its 7th Working Council meeting under the chairpersonship of WPC Secretary MNA Dr Shahida Rehmani at the Parliament House on Thursday. The meeting was attended by WPC members Farrukh Khan, Tahira Aurangzeb, Rana Ansar, Munazza Hassan, Naeema Kishwar Khan, and the Convenor of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights, Dr Nikhat Shakeel Khan. During the meeting, the Working Council outlined its key activities for the upcoming “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign. The planned activities include the launch of a digital drive to raise public awareness on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and women’s rights on social media platforms, to conduct a Roundtable of Parliamentarians, civil society organizations and experts on GBV to examine GBV prevention, legislative gaps and implementation, to conduct regional seminars related to provision of women’s inheritance rights, and to draft recommendations for constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening women’s inheritance rights and ensuring gender-sensitive review of all legislation and policy implementation. Dr Shahida Rehmani reaffirmed WPC’s cross-party commitment to placing gender equality and women’s rights at the heart of parliamentary action. She stated, “It is imperative that our laws not only exist on paper but are effectively implemented. Through awareness, legislative reform, and oversight, the WPC will work to translate promises into progress.” Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
