DETROIT – Local 4 is partnering with the Center for Youth and Families for its November ‘Go 4 it’ event, “Operation Cozy,” to collect winter clothing for children in Detroit‘s most vulnerable neighborhoods. The winter gear collection drive will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Kadesh Baptist Church, 20361 Plymouth Road. The event aims to gather new and gently used winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves for children in need. “The need is great. Especially now in our time. We have experienced a number of requests that have come in, and we’re hoping that we can fill those requests this year,” said Elizabeth Richardson, COO of the Center for Youth and Families. For over two decades, the Center has served Detroit’s west side, Hamtramck, and Highland Park communities, focusing on families facing various challenges. “A large portion of our families that we serve come from single-parent homes. Those homes sometimes have disparities that present, i.e., lack of employment opportunities, lack of educational opportunities,” Richardson said. The nonprofit organization provides comprehensive support services, including access to therapy, food assistance, parenting classes, and skills training in computers, jobs, and trades. Their facility serves as a safe haven for youth aged 10 to 17. “Our CEO, Jeri Fisher, coined this phrase that there is no such thing as bad kids, only kids that have had bad things happen to them,” said Devin Gough from the Center. The organization brings together mental health therapists, teachers, principals, and faith leaders to support both parents and youth, helping bridge communication gaps within families.
