California Governor Gavin Newsom speaks during a Democratic rally in Houston yesterday (Picture: AP) Donald Trump is partial to sharing AI images of himself, but he might not find this one as flattering. California governor Gavin Newsom, who has had his share of high profile tussles with the US president, trolled him again in a series of posts yesterday. He compared Trump to Marie Antoinette, the last French queen who was beheaded by guillotine in the Revolution. She is most famous for supposedly uttering the words ‘Let them eat cake’ – displaying a stunning ignorance to the plight of her starving subjects – although she almost certainly never actually said this. Newsom’s press office shared a mocked up portrait of Trump scowling while dressed in an opulent blue and white dress, with a matching blue bow in his towering, ringleted grey hairstyle, captioned, ‘GOOD NIGHT, PEASANTS!’ The AI image posted to X by Gavin Newsom’s press office (Picture: @GovPressOffice) The picture was shared in response to the news that Trump would be travelling to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, while a government shutdown dragged into its fortieth day, and access to food stamp benefits is disrupted. In a series of X posts on Friday, Newsom attacked the president, writing: ‘Donald Trump is literally fighting in court to ensure Americans starve. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.’ His press office went as far as to say that Trump’s administration was ‘fighting tooth and nail to starve children’. GOOD NIGHT, PEASANTS! https://t.co/VysXn11GiA pic.twitter.com/Xvm9MUiGrU— Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) November 8, 2025 Newsom seems to particularly like the picture, as it’s not the first time his team has shared it. His press office also shared it last month, responding to reports that renovations of the White House ballroom continue, despite budget problems elsewhere. Mocking Trump’s signature style of posting in all caps, they wrote: ‘TRUMP ‘MARIE ANTOINETTE’ SAYS, ‘NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU PEASANTS, BUT A BALLROOM FOR THE QUEEN!’ Last month, Trump himself shared an AI-generated video of himself as a king flying a fighter jet, bombing protesters with excrement. In response to the No Kings protests, he did nothing to dispell the claims, instead showing his feelings towards those demonstrating with the ‘King Trump’ plane. He has also shared a bizarre AI video of Gaza with nightlife strip, beach and hotels, and under his leadership, the Dpeartment of Homeland Security shared a mocked up version of the Pokemon theme tune based on arresting illegal immigrants. A shutdown happens when Congress does not agree on a budget, meaning parts of the federal government must close until a spending plan is approved. During a shutdown, ‘non-essential’ federal services are halted or reduced, and many government employees are placed on unpaid leave. Trump said he ‘won’t be extorted’ by Democrats who are demanding negotiations to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of the year for millions of Americans. Millions of people in America are also at risk of losing food aid benefits. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
