'Bugonia's Emma Stone On Why She Was So Afraid To Shave Her Head

Emma Stone stars in Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia in a role where she had to shave her head. Filming the scene had to be done in one take, which made the Oscar-winning actress “so afraid” to mess it up. “Stay still. That was it. I was meditating on stay still, just stay still,” Stone told Entertainment Weekly about what she was thinking while filming that scene. In Bugonia, Stone plays a high-powered CEO who is kidnapped by two men who suspect she’s an alien. The kidnappers believe her hair could be a communication device and shaved her head so she remains contactless. “Because I am not awake there, I was like, play dead, basically, play dead,” Stone said about filming the pivotal scene and being “so afraid” doing so. Stone added, “It was one take and there were four cameras set up just to make sure.” Lanthimos said it was not difficult to convince Stone to shave her head, adding, “I mean, it was in the script, so I didn’t even have to tell her. She read it first, and she had the slightest hesitation just before, not hesitation to do it, but she had kind of a knot in her stomach. But it happened. Thankfully, we did it. We only had one shot to achieve it. And then she felt great. She saw herself and she really loved it, and she felt very free.” Bugonia also stars Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.
