Sydney Sweeney's sports biopic Christy is having a tumultuous theatrical run in several different regards. Following the early career of boxer Christy Martin and depicting her abusive relationship with her former trainer and husband, Christy has been met with middling-to-good reviews. However, a star reportedly originally attached to a lead role has now directly criticized Sweeney. Christy is directed by David Michôd and also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O'Brian. Following its mixed festival reception, Christy debuted to a shocking box office haul, grossing only $1.3 million in its opening weekend on an estimated budget between $30 and $40 million. However, Christy's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is nearly perfect. Additionally, Sweeney commented on Christy after it bombed at the box office, calling the movie "the most impactful project of [her] life" because of its depiction of domestic abuse, and stating: "we don't always make art for the numbers, we make it for the impact." Regardless of its issues as a film, people seem to agree that Christy tells an important story. However, now, actor Ruby Rose has suggested that Christy Martin's story deserved better than Sweeney. Rose states in a comment via Threads: "The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay." The character Rose refers to may be Christy or Sherry, while the real Christy Salters (no longer using her ex-husband's surname) is now married to a woman. But Rose goes on to suggest that Sweeney's actions and political affiliations are anti-LBGTQ+ and that her leading this movie is insulting to the people it purportedly represents, saying: For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for 'the people'. None of 'the people' want to see someone who hates them, parading around and pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better. In addition to being at the center of controversy this year, Christy is the latest in Sweeney's string of box office flops, following Eden and Americana. Eden became a hit on digital after its theatrical run, but the pattern still does not bode well for Sweeney as she prepares for the release of her final 2025 movie, The Housemaid.
