That's a big killer - Amanda Anisimova gives crucial advice to young tennis stars as she draws on personal 'burnout' experience

Amanda Anisimova recently called on young tennis players to be more attentive to their own needs instead of always saying "yes to everything". According to Anisimova, not listening to the self and always conforming to and complying with the demands and expectations of others can result in "burnout". The resurgent American WTA star cited her own personal experience to drive home her point. In May 2023, following a run of wretched results, Anisimova went on an indefinite hiatus. At the time, the American explained that her decision stemmed from burnout and concerns surrounding her mental health. Her singles ranking took a significant hit due to her decision to take a break. However, since her comeback in early 2024, she has steadily risen up the ranks. This year, Amanda Anisimova has firmly established herself as a WTA top 10 star, reaching two Major finals spanning the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. The 24-year-old also won two prestigious WTA 1000 titles, first in Doha and more recently in Beijing. In a recent interview with Reem Abulleil for The Guardian, the World No. 4, sending a message to young and aspiring tennis players, said:"I think it’s really important to let girls know, or boys, to make the right decisions for yourself and listen to yourself and not try and say yes to everything and feel like you have to do certain things. I think that’s a big killer in certain ways, is just feeling like you have to do certain things and that can really lead to burnout."She also opined that if she had the chance to turn back time and do things differently for herself, she would."So that’s definitely something that I would have done differently," the four-time career singles titlist added."Listen honestly to yourself, to your intuition and what your body is telling you" - Amanda AnisimovaAmanda Anisimova reacts after winning a point at the 2025 WTA Finals (Source: Getty)In the buildup to her semifinal showdown against reigning World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at this year's Wimbledon Championships, Amanda Anisimova briefly touched on how she approached life during the mental health break she took back in 2023. According to the American, she made the most of her time away from tennis to explore her interests off the court. She also shared an important lesson she learned along the way."I learned a lot about myself, my interests off the court and just taking some time to breathe and live a normal life for a bit," she said before her semi-final win at the All England Club. What I've learned is to listen honestly to yourself, to your intuition and what your body is telling you," Anisimova said.Currently, Amanda Anisimova is bidding to end her 2025 tennis season on a high at the year-end WTA Finals. So far, Anisimova has lost one and won one in the group stage. Her third and final group stage match, against Iga Swiatek, is set to decide if the American reaches the semifinals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
