I had really bad ADHD: Jordan Chiles on turning chaos into confidence and Olympic dreams

Jordan Chiles opened up about developing self-confidence and her journey towards her Olympic dream in her latest interview. The American athlete shared that she has had her fair share of downfalls throughout her career so far and uses affirmations to develop self-confidence and navigate through the situation in a better manner.Chiles won the gold medal in the team event at the Paris Olympics and concluded her season after being the runner-up at the NCAA Championships. Since then, the American athlete took some time off the mat and decided to go out of her comfort zone by participating in the latest season of Dancing with the Stars. Jordan Chiles was recently featured on the cover of Essence magazine and spoke about developing self-confidence."A lot of self-confidence comes from a lot of affirmations, like I tell myself, like in the mirror, even on my downfalls, and worst days, like I could just get back up and look, you are that girl, and you continue to push forward and conquer," she said.Furthermore, the Olympic gold medalist shared an incident where her dream of becoming an Olympian was planted. Jordan Chiles shared that she had ADHD as a child, and her parents enrolled her in sports, as they thought it would be the perfect outlet for her energy."When I was watching the 2008 Olympics, I was watching gymnastics, and I told my mom like, That's what I want to do. I want to become an Olympian. I didn't say in what sport I thought I was going to be in, like track and field or something else, because that's what I did before gymnastics. It was something that kind of calmed me down. I had really bad ADHD when I was younger and my parents couldn't technically control me at certain times and it got to a point where it was just like,'Hey, lets put you in a sport and see what happens," she added. The American athlete urged the parents to let the children use their energy through various outlets, as it can lead to endless positive outcomes.Chiles shared that she struggled to focus on one thing for a long time, and sports became her perfect outlet for her extra energy."Was I one of those children who, you know, couldn’t have full conversations without moving? Yes. But also my parents knew that there are ways to really execute that energy and put it into something else. So to anybody out there now, I’m not taking away from parents who, you know, do what they have to do. I’m not doing any of that. But I do always say if your child does have energy, let them use it because you never know what can happen," she said. Moreover, she expressed that gymnastics became a lifesaver for her as it gave her, the platform to grow and excel.
