Food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy have introduced health-focused ratings-‘health scores’ and ‘protein drops’-amid increasing scrutiny over food quality, even as fine-dine chains tweak menus to meet growing demand for healthier cuisine.Zomato’s founder Deepinder Goyal on Monday announced the introduction of a healthy score based on AI and restaurant data in its menu in an X post where he said, “For years, something about Zomato made me uneasy.” Swiggy had introduced its rating last week. Its vice president, food strategy, customer experience and new initiatives, Deepak Maloo, in a LinkedIn post, called it “the next drop in high protein, with no fry, low cal and gluten free categories.”Both platforms, which dominate India’s food delivery ecosystem, have been called out on social media for enabling quick delivery of food that are at times unhealthy, frozen meals, or not always fresh.ET Bureau”Zomato and Swiggy and Zepto-please, don’t. And if you are so keen, please make the product palatable,” Bombay Shaving Company founder Shantanu Deshpande had written on social media platform LinkedIn.Live EventsGoyal’s post on Monday went viral, sparking a variety of mixed reactions. Some drew attention to allegedly “low hygiene standards followed by smaller cloud kitchens” while others appreciated the move. Another set of people said there were loopholes in the platforms’ health scores.”We made eating out and ordering in easier than ever, but we never really helped people truly eat better,” Goyal said in his X post. “Yes, you could find a salad or a smoothie bowl, but the truth is, if you wanted to eat genuinely nourishing food, Zomato didn’t make it easy.” Executives at restaurant chains, meanwhile, said anticipating the health shifts before they become the norm would give them a first mover advantage.”Healthy dining is no longer a fringe trend, it’s a mainstream movement,” said Zorawar Kalra, owner of chains Farzi Cafe and Masala Library. “You’ll now see menus with lighter ingredient-driven dishes and higher plant-based options. The future of dining is ‘gourmet meets mindful’,” he said. The developments come amid a surging share of the food delivery market in India. A report by Bain & Company and Swiggy estimated that the country’s food delivery market could cross ₹2 lakh crore by 2030, growing at 18% compound annual growth rate, buoyed by higher disposable incomes, consumer affinity to order in and experiment, and digitisation.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
