Zohran Mamdani could be Democrats’ savior

Zohran Mamdani could be Democrats' savior

It was hilarious to read “Senator’s backing of Mamdani rebuked” in The Baltimore Sun on Sept. 19. The supporters of the worst and most dangerous president in U.S. history are beating up on Senator Chris Van Hollen for supporting the next mayor of New York City, a candidate for the poor and middle class rather than the corporate elites. It is also sad that Rep. Andy Harris mentioned the cutting of “government spending.” Rather than supporting programs like health care for all, which is endorsed by Mamdani, Harris, a physician, voted to transfer tax dollars from health care into the pockets of the billionaire supporters of Trump. This wicked act will add to the deficit several trillion dollars.
One possible reason for the representative’s attack on Mamdani is that he could be the person to lead the Democrats out of the wilderness. His campaign strategy included talking to the people, knocking on doors and using phone banks. Many Democratic candidates such as former Governor Andrew Cuomo depended on massive contributions from the big donors who expected a return on their investments.
The buying of legislators is an insult to the idea of democracy. I want a candidate beholden to the little people not to those who frequent luxury boxes at stadiums funded by the taxpayers. I cannot imagine the angst Rep. Harris will have to deal with once Zohran Mamdani becomes the mayor of New York City. I will then be singing “Happy Days Are Here Again.”
