Zion Williamson is entering the 2025-26 season with new hope for both himself and the New Orleans Pelicans. Though his career has been marked by major injuries, the former 1st overall pick appears focused and healthy. With his high-impact play (when available), Zion’s availability will be the most important factor in the Pelicans’ ability to compete at a level worthy of reaching the playoffs this season.
The 2024-25 season was filled with unfortunate timing for New Orleans. Zion played only 30 games, premier defender Herb Jones missed most of the year with a shoulder injury, and Trey Murphy III was lost to an injury to his rotator cuff in March. All of this, combined with point guard Dejounte Murray tearing his Achilles resulted in the team never reaching their full potential, making their health a clear priority going into next season.
Recently, Pelicans head coach Willie Green praised Zion’s progress in offseason workouts. Marc J Spears revealed on ESPN, “They were actually out here Loyola Mary Mount University, the whole team working out, playing five on five. He looked great. Great shape.” He also emphasized that when Zion is on the court, the team has a major advantage, saying, “This is a guy that’s only played over 30 games twice in his career… but when Zion plays, they win.”

Spears highlighted that Green valued Zion’s affect on the morale and dynamics of the team, noting “He’s showing a lot more leadership… when Zion plays, he’s one of the best players in the league.” Green’s comments show that the franchise values Zion not just as a scorer or an athlete, but as a central guiding figure and have noted how he elevates the performance of those around him.
This is a developing story.
