Surveillance photos released by the Sutter County Sheriff's Office show a man carrying what appears to be an AR-style rifle outside a smoke shop along Butte House Road in northeast Yuba City last Saturday. Deputies said they want the public's help identifying the person captured in the images. The photos appear to show an extended magazine and clothing details investigators hope will produce tips. According to CBS Sacramento, the Sheriff's Office said in a social media post Tuesday that a white adult male was seen outside a business on Butte House Road between Tierra Buena Road and Harter Parkway, carrying an AR-style rifle with an extended magazine and wearing a blue-and-tan long-sleeve plaid shirt, blue jeans and brown work boots. Anyone who recognizes the person or has information was asked to contact the Sheriff's Office investigations unit at (530) 822-2210, the post said. What California law says California restricts large-capacity magazines (generally defined as devices that hold more than 10 rounds), and possession, transfer or manufacture of such magazines can carry fines or criminal charges under state law, as mentioned by Cal. Penal Code § 32310. The state's large-capacity magazine ban was recently affirmed by an en banc panel of the Ninth Circuit in March 2025, a ruling covered by national outlets such as Reuters that could shape how local prosecutors treat cases involving extended magazines. Local enforcement and recent seizures Yuba County law-enforcement teams have recently seized AR-style rifles and other illegal weapons during targeted operations, a trend local reporters say is part of an ongoing effort to crack down on weapons and drug activity in the county. Hoodline reported on several recent seizures that officials say highlight the dangers deputies are trying to address. How to report tips If you recognize the person in the surveillance images or have information about the incident, contact the Sutter County Sheriff's Office investigations unit at (530) 822-2210 or call 911 in an emergency. Authorities asked witnesses to preserve any video or photos and to avoid confronting the individual, as per CBS Sacramento. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing. Deputies urged anyone with information to come forward so they can identify the person and close the case.
