YouTube TV subscribers in Lincoln face losing NBC programs as deadline approaches

YouTube TV could drop NBCUniversal channels from its service if the two companies don’t reach a deal Tuesday, which would affect subscribers in Lincoln.
KSNB Local4, an NBC affiliate based in Hastings, published an alert saying that while the station isn’t owned by either company, the dispute could impact access to its channel if NBC stations are dropped from YouTube TV.
The station said it encourages both sides to reach an agreement quickly.
Television networks enter into carriage agreements with providers like YouTube TV. If the two companies don’t reach an agreement, Lincoln YouTube TV subscribers will no longer have access to NBC Entertainment, NBC Sports, NBC News and other programming. Telemundo stations would also be impacted.
YouTube released a statement Sept. 25 that said NBCUniversal was asking the company to pay more than what they charge consumers for the same content on Peacock.
If NBC content is not available for an extended period of time, YouTube, which is a subsidiary of the Alphabet company Google, will offer subscribers a $10 credit, according to the update.
At the start of 2024, YouTube TV had about 8 million subscribers, according to a company blog post. Additionally, YouTube has over 13% of monthly TV viewing, more than any other streaming platform, according to Nielsen data.
A separate NBCUniversal website listed what shows people could lose if the companies don’t reach a deal and included a link to switch providers. KSNB Local4 linked to the website in its alert.
KSNB Local4 declined to comment further. Both NBCUniversal and Google, YouTube’s owner, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The streaming service has a history of waiting until the last minute before approving new contracts.
YouTube’s agreement with Fox was extended right at an Aug. 27 evening deadline, according to a YouTube blog post. The following day the service announced a long-term agreement with Fox to keep its content, including the Fox Broadcast Network, Fox News and Fox Sports,
Prior to that, Paramount channels were set to expire on Feb. 13. The two organizations also reached a short-term deal that evening and announced a full deal on Feb. 15, according to yet another blog post. Paramount channels include CBS, CBS Sports and Nickelodeon.
YouTube TV’s contract with Disney is set to expire in October. That contract includes ABC and ESPN content.
