You can now buy your own tree in Cardiff

Over the next six months Wales' capital will be much greener as thousands of trees will be planted across the city and residents can make a small donation to help make it a reality. By spring 2026 30,000 trees will be planted throughout Cardiff as part of the council's project to make the city greener. Over the past four years more than 118,500 trees have been planted in hundreds of locations by volunteers involved with the council's Coed Caerdydd scheme, transforming an area equal to nearly 30 Principality Stadium pitches into a new urban forest. Over 16,000 hours have already been dedicated to making Cardiff greener by local volunteers, schools, businesses, and community groups. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here The last season of the project had 2,166 volunteers take part in 114 planting events at multiple locations. The thousands of new trees will be planted in green spaces, on streets and in school , community and privately-owned spaces by spring next year. Over 200 different sites will be home to the new trees that will include oak and rowan grown from locally collected seeds in the project’s tree nursery. The sites will include new orchards in schools and parks, on Cardiff's streets, hedgerows along public rights of way, and on farms on the outskirts of the city. Cabinet member for culture, parks and events, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said: "As these trees grow they will make our air cleaner, help mitigate flooding, keep people cool in summer, provide habitats for wildlife and simply make Cardiff a greener, more pleasant place to live. "They will also make a significant contribution towards our vision for a carbon neutral Cardiff. So much has been achieved already through the Coed Caerdydd project but together with the continued help and support of the community we can do even more." The council has now introduced a new tree donation scheme to receive financial contributions to the project with a donation of £1 enabling it to buy one sapling. Coed Caerdydd said it can't guarantee donors where trees will be planted in specific locations but donors are welcome to get in touch if they have suggestions. They said: "New areas for trees, hedgerows and woodland planting are carefully selected as part of ongoing maintenance and development of Cardiff’s tree canopy." Half a hectare of woodland can be grown with a £500 donation which after 20 years can capture between 12-15 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
