Yellowstone's future on Paramount+ explained as Taylor Sheridan departs

The future of Yellowstone on Paramount+ is up in the air as its creator Taylor Sheridan is set to depart from the streaming platform. The epic Western drama, Yellowstone, ran for five seasons from 2018 to 2024 and despite its conclusion, it continues to be a top performer on Paramount+. Sheridan has since created spin-offs 1883 and 1923, along with three other shows all set in the Yellowstone universe. These include The Dutton Ranch featuring Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly ) and Rip Wheeler's (Cole Hauser), and The Madison, both for Paramount+, as well as Y: Marshals for CBS. However, in a surprising career twist, Sheridan has inked a $1 billion deal with NBCUniversal, which is due to kick off on January 1, 2029. The entire Yellowstone universe, along with Sheridan's other creations like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King and Lioness, are currently available to watch on Paramount+. While Sheridan will be ending his deal with Paramount in a few years' time, this won't affect where fans can watch his work. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the entire Yellowstone franchise, as well as his other shows that have been created for Paramount, will remain on Paramount. This suggests that Sheridan will need to create entirely new IP (Intellectual Property) when he joins NBCUniversal in 2029. The deal in question is rumoured to be a five-year contract worth an eye-watering $1 billion, dwarfing his 2001 agreement with Paramount Global, which was reportedly valued at a mere $200 million. His contract with NBCUniversal will kick off just as Sheridan's deal with Paramount concludes after its tenure through 2028. In the meantime, there's still plenty to get excited about, including his new singing contest The Road featuring Keith Urban and Blake Shelton. The departure news follows Paramount's merger with Skydancer and the exit of Paramount Global co-CEO Chris McCarthy, with whom Sheridan had a close professional bond. Yellowstone can be viewed on Paramount+.
