The New York Yankees took care of business against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday and returned to a share of the American League East division lead alongside the Toronto Blue Jays.
The victory was propelled by two homers from franchise superstar Aaron Judge, as well as an encouraging return to form for starter Max Fried. After giving up just one earned run across seven innings on Wednesday, it looks like Fried is ready to take on the role of the Yankees’ playoff ace.
But as the postseason rotation starts to take shape, the news isn’t as encouraging for reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who seems headed out of the rotation come October.

“Through 10 starts, Gil has a 3.29 ERA, but an expected ERA of 5.09,” Chris Kirschner noted for The Athletic. “Among 176 starters with at least 50 innings pitched this season, his expected (fielding independent pitching) is the third worst. Those are concerning numbers the Yankees are weighing as they decide who should be in their postseason rotation.”
Fried and Carlos Rodon seem to be locks for the top two starter roles in the playoffs. Then Cam Schlittler or Will Warren could be in line for the third and, if necessary, fourth starter roles. That leaves Gil on the outside looking in after a stellar rookie campaign was derailed by an injury at the start of this season and some issues on the mound in recent starts.
When asked about Gil’s struggles this season, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone offered a clear, four-word diagnosis of the problem: “I think it’s command,” the manager said, per Kirschner.
“I don’t think it’s anything physical,” Boone added, according to Kirschner.
Gil could be in line to start the Yankees’ final regular-season game on Sunday, which would essentially rule him out of a potential wild card series start. As he looks to regain the form he enjoyed last year, it’s increasingly unlikely that he’ll get the chance to test his stuff as a starter in this year’s playoffs.
