The New York Yankees are on the verge of being swept out of the playoffs by the Toronto Blue Jays, and after eight seasons of Aaron Boone at the helm, they have only made the World Series once, losing in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. With their postseason hopes on the brink, and their continued failure in October, Aaron Boone could be managing for his job as the series heads to the Bronx.
The Yankees have had three managers since 1996, two of whom won the World Series, and the third is Boone, who has fallen short in the postseason each time the team has played fall baseball. The Yankees are a storied franchise and do not tolerate failure well. If the Yankees cannot shrug off the 2-0 series deficit, then Boone could be in hot water, especially with the pair of embarrassing losses to the Blue Jays.
In July, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report placed Boone on the hot seat, citing his consistent collapses in the second half that have the team enter the playoffs ice cold. Despite being given an extension ahead of this season, Boone has shown time and time again that when the lights get bright, he cannot rally his team to get the job done. After losing the first two games of the series by a combined 15 runs, if another rout ensues and the Yankees are sent packing, changes could be coming in New York.
The Yankees are returning home for the third game of the American League Division Series, and while they played outstanding at home this season, the extra pressure of elimination could cause the team to crack under the pressure and enter the offseason questioning if Boone is the man for one of the most coveted jobs in all of sports.
