The two leaders will hold their first formal meeting on Friday afternoon, according to the Japanese government. That comes after the two spoke briefly earlier today, according to a post on Takaichi’s official account on X. China is Japan’s largest trading partner while the US provides Tokyo with crucial security guarantees, which forces Japan into an awkward balancing act when China and the US are increasingly at loggerheads.
