WWE Star John Cena Gets Strong Words From AEW’s Tony Khan

With John Cena nearing the end of his WWE farewell tour, he received quite the remarks from All Elite Wrestling's Tony Khan. The AEW founder and president said that even though he's never met Cena, he knows quite a bit about his involvement in professional wrestling. Khan sat down for an interview with Z100 New York and was asked about Cena's importance in the industry. He said he wasn't expecting that question. Still, he referred to Cena as "absolutely a legendary pro wrestler who came into the space and became a huge star very quickly on television." The AEW co-owner credited Cena's charisma and work ethic for his success, both within WWE and in his acting career. Similar to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Cena has built himself up from wrestling star to television and movie star. Everybody I know that's worked with John Cena has only the very, very best things to say about him," he said. "He's known for being the ultimate wrestler. He's also known for being a very, very talented actor," Khan said, adding that he's a big fan of Cena in his starring role in "Peacemaker." Khan mentioned that even though he's never worked with Cena, AEW partnered with DC, which is presenting their Full Gear event. "I think that he's absolutely fantastic in the ring, and he seems fantastic out of the ring. Certainly, on-screen, one of the all-time greats. He came into the wrestling business after many of the top stars were either getting ready to retire or entering the final phase of their career, and he really stepped up as one of the biggest wrestling stars of all-time," Khan said. He said even though he and Cena have never met, he has a ton of respect for him as a professional wrestler and overall person. Khan's remarks arrive as Cena is down to just a handful of appearances before he officially retires from WWE. There have been rumors that he might face off against one of his former foes who has left for AEW, such as Adam "Edge" Copeland or Chris Jericho. As of this writing, both stars are still with AEW, and there have been no confirmed reports that either will have any match against Cena in the coming months. Former WCW and WWE writer Vince Russo suggested he had heard rumors that Cena was unhappy with the booking of his retirement tour, and there were discussions between Cena and AEW. However, no confirmed reports have emerged. Cena will appear at several episodes of "Monday Night Raw" in November, along with the WWE Survivor Series premium live event. His final match before retirement occurs at "Saturday Night's Main Event" on Dec. 13, in Washington, D.C., although his opponent is currently unknown.
