WSUP Ghana launches 2025-2030 business plan to transform urban WASH services

Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) Ghana through its 2025-2030 Business Plan, has announced a bold agenda to expand inclusive and climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in urban and peri-urban communities.

The launch, held in Accra, brought together stakeholders from government, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and community groups.

Key institutions represented included the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, WHO, UNICEF, Ghana Water Limited (GWL), the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), and the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS).

Commit more finances to the WASH sector in 2025 Budget – Government urged

Since 2010, WSUP Ghana has partnered with over 30 municipalities and agencies such as GWL, CWSA, and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to strengthen WASH systems, mobilise financing, and build institutional capacity.

These collaborations have led to innovations such as GWL’s Low-Income Customer Support Department, sanitation surcharges in municipalities, and the rollout of digital revenue systems.

The new plan focuses on five strategic priorities: strengthening sanitation value chains, improving utility capacity, enhancing WASH in schools, driving equitable services through innovative financing, and building climate resilience through resource management.

“This business plan is about ensuring that no urban resident is left behind. By strengthening partnerships and embracing innovation, we can deliver safe, affordable, and dignified water and sanitation services at scale,” the report said.

WSUP Ghana is also deploying digital tools in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and municipalities in the Ashanti Region to improve monitoring of WASH facilities in schools.

Similar solutions are being used in water asset management to improve service delivery and investment planning.
