Quarterback Daylin Lee is playing like he wants to be CIAA player of the year.
And who could argue with that after he threw four more touchdown passes on Saturday afternoon as visiting Winston-Salem State beat Bowie State 28-21 at Bulldog Stadium.
Lee has been on a roll in his junior season and because of that the Rams are serious contenders for a berth in the CIAA championship game.
The Rams improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. The Bulldogs fell to 1-3 overall dropping their first conference game.
“I was just trying to get the guys the ball and (Devontay) Deloatch was making some big plays for us so I just tried to do my part,” Lee said.
Lee’s 49-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Washington early in the fourth quarter gave the Rams a 28-12 lead. It was Lee’s fourth touchdown pass of the game.
Lee was 18 of 29 passing for 190 yards with the four touchdown passes but he was sacked four times. He now has 14 touchdown passes through five games against just two interceptions.
The Rams withstood the Bulldogs rally to win on the road.
After the early 14-0 lead the Rams’ offense struggled for the rest of the half. Lee was sacked with 2:27 to go in the half causing a fumble and the Bulldogs recovered.
“The defense made some big plays for us early and we just tried to do our part offensively to get on the board,” Lee said. “This is a big win in the conference, and we just try to be 1-0 every week.”
However, the Rams got the ball back and Lee hit Deloatch for a 10-yard touchdown pass. It was Deloatch’s third TD catch of the half for a 21-9 lead.
The Bulldogs got their fourth field goal of the half from Chris Coleman to cut the deficit to 21-12 at halftime.
The Bulldogs cut their deficit to 14-3 late in the first quarter on a Coleman 29-yard field goal. They also got another field goal in the second quarter to cut it to 14-6.
With seven minutes to go in the half the Bulldogs added another field goal from Coleman to cut it to 14-9.
The Rams took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Lee hit Deloatch for the second time for a touchdown. This one was from 21 yards out.
It was the second time the Rams capitalized on a fumble. Terrell Chance recovered the fumble, and the Rams were in business.
The Rams got their first touchdown thanks to a turnover created by the defense. CJ Brown recovered a fumble deep in the Bulldogs’ territory and Lee hit Deloatch for a 19-yard touchdown. Gilberto Lorenanza’s point-after attempt was good for a 7-0 lead early in the game.
On the turnover it was Jupe Alston who sacked quarterback Malakai Anthony of the Bulldogs.
Anthony also fumbled again on their next possession, setting up the Rams second touchdown
Deloatch led the way for the Rams with 12 catches for 88 yards and Washington had two catches for 62 yards as the offense racked up 248 yards.
Running back Timothy Ruff had 13 carries for 63 yards and Noah Marshall had seven carries for 20 yards.
