Wrexham star branded as 'absolute nightmare' after transfer leaves club red-faced

Wrexham's decision to sign Kieffer Moore has been lauded, with the striker being described as an "absolute nightmare" for defenders. The Welsh international was snapped up by the Red Dragons from Sheffield United for £2million at the beginning of August, just in time for their first season in the second tier in 43 years. Since his arrival at the Racecourse Ground, Moore has been in fine form , netting nine goals in 17 matches across all competitions. The 33-year-old's impressive haul includes a perfect hat-trick in Wrexham's thrilling 3-2 victory over then-unbeaten Championship leaders Coventry City on October 31. After a shaky start to the season, Phil Parkinson 's side now sit in 13th place following their 1-0 win over Charlton at home on Saturday, just five points shy of the play-off spots. Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman reckons that unlocking Moore's potential has been instrumental to their success, suggesting that he wasn't valued enough at Bramall Lane. The ex- Wolves and Sunderland striker also hinted that United might be ruing their decision to let the towering forward go as they languish near the foot of the table. "The Kieffer Moore debate always rumbles on, as it does with big, tall, physical strikers like that," Goodman told Football League World . "They seem to be dying out of fashion, but he always seems to be effective. "I think the problem at Sheffield United was that he wasn't particularly loved by the fans. I'm not sure they appreciated what they actually had, or whether Sheffield United played to his strengths. Wrexham certainly are doing that, hence the goals return, the nuisance value, the assists. "He is a handful, and his sheer physical size must make him an absolute nightmare to try and defend against. Wrexham recognise that, they play very much to his strengths and they're reaping the benefits of that." Moore's only season with the Blades following his 2024 switch from Bournemouth proved disappointing. He netted just five times in 18 outings and took much of the criticism for United's Championship play-off final heartbreak against Sunderland at Wembley. The striker faced a backlash for a misplaced backpass that gifted Sunderland winger Tommy Watson a decisive late goal. Moore has opened up about the difficulties he encountered in the Steel City before Ruben Selles sanctioned his summer departure. He said: "It was a difficult season. I started well, but then it got to January and I struggled with multiple injuries and had to have surgery. Coming back from that wasn't great, but I got myself back in a position where I was showing a good portion of myself. "Would I have liked the season to turn out better? Of course. But I use things like that as motivation. I wanted to come here [Wrexham] and almost remind people what kind of player I am." Moore has been selected for Craig Bellamy 's most recent Wales squad for their final World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia. He previously netted the winning goal in their win against Kazakhstan in September. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
