Young Suraj Vashishth impressed during his senior World Championship debut, reaching the 60kg quarterfinals before being eliminated, while Aman Gulia faced an early exit from the tournament on Friday.
Suraj, the U20 World Championships bronze medallist and U20 Asian champion, won two bouts, lifting the spirits of the coaching staff amidst other Greco Roman wrestlers’ struggles to score. The 19-year-old from Rohtak ended India’s six-year wait for a gold medal at the international level by winning the U20 Asian title in Bishkek in July. With more experience and exposure, he is likely to improve further. He has already secured a senior-level silver at the Mongolia Open and a bronze at the Yasar Dogu.
In the 72kg category, Ankit Gulia lost his qualification bout by technical superiority to Korean Yeonghun Noh, who later lost in the quarterfinals, resulting in Ankit’s elimination. Competing in the 97kg category, Nitesh began with a narrow 3-2 win over Croatia’s Filip Smetko but lost 0-4 to world number one Iranian Mohammadhadi Saravi. Aman was defeated in his 77kg repechage round by technical superiority to Ukraine’s Ihor Bychkkov.
