Burns aficionados from around the globe descended on Kilmarnock at the weekend as the town hosted the annual conference of the Robert Burns World Federation (RBWF) for the first time in over 30 years. RBWF members from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Canada and North America attended the conference and AGM which were held to celebrate the 140th year of the creation of the federation which has its headquarters in Kilmarnock. During the three-day festivities, delegates were treated to a packed programme of Burns-themed visits and entertainment including a trip to the Dick Institute to see the press that was used to print the First Edition of the poet’s works. They also enjoyed an afternoon in Mauchline, where they visited the Burns House Museum, Nanse Tinnock’s Hoose, Poosie Nancie’s and a wander round the church graveyard, where some of Burns’ family and associates are buried. Provost Claire Leitch said: “Over the years, the annual conference has been held all over the world – so we were absolutely delighted that it came to Kilmarnock this year. “ East Ayrshire holds a very special place in Burns story as, amongst other events, it was the birthplace of his first published works “The Kilmarnock Edition”, and we are really proud of that. “I hope all delegates had a great time and enjoyed seeing the extensive collection of Burns memorabilia on display in our museum’s collection – which included the original Tam O’ Shanter manuscript. “It was smashing to meet the delegates and join them at several of the brilliant events celebrating the life and works of Scotland’s national bard. “Special congratulations to Jean Abdulrahim who was promoted to position of President of the Robert Burns World Federation following their AGM, held at the Dick Institute on the Saturday.” Margaretann Dougall, events convenor from the Robert Burns World Federation said: “Our delegates had a wonderful weekend in Kilmarnock and thanks to East Ayrshire Leisure Trust, we were able to see many Burns artefacts unique to the town and surrounding area. “The conference once again highlighted the importance of Kilmarnock in the life of Burns. Our thanks also go to East Ayrshire Council for their continued support and enthusiasm for the event.” Don’t miss the latest Ayrshire headlines – sign up to our free daily newsletter
