World Cup hopeful training with Sydney FC

Glover, 27, was one of three keepers in Australia’s squad for last month’s two-game series against New Zealand but was omitted from the national squad for the current international window following the return of 100-cap custodian Mat Ryan.

During the September camp, Middlesbrough announced that former Melbourne City custodian Glover had been released by the English Championship club, who had joined on a three-year deal in July 2023.

And still without a club, Glover has returned to his hometown of Sydney, where he is training with the Sky Blues under the club’s goalkeeper coach Matthew Nash, who previously mentored Glover at the Central Coast Mariners.

The Sky Blues don’t yet have any plans to sign Glover, despite their relative inexperience of their two current gloveman, Harrison Devenish-Meares and Gus Hoefsloot.

Devenish-Meares made his A-League debut last season after ousting former Socceroos keeper Andrew Redmayne, but was patchy over his 20 appearances.

Teenager Hoefsloot is yet to play an A-League match.

Sky Blues coach Ufuk Talay, whose side travels to Coopers Stadium to meet Adelaide United in the opening game of the season on Friday night, is understood whether to be weighing up whether to add another keeper to his squad, or leave a spot open in his already near-full squad for a player – not necessarily a gloveman – to join the club in January’s transfer window.

“We try to recruit according to our brand as Sydney FC, and hopefully we’ve done an excellent job this season,” said Talay, whose side is desperate for redemption after missing last season’s finals series.

“One thing we learnt from last year was that we needed depth, and we’ve created that environment this year where we’ve doubled up and tripled up in some positions across the park.”
