A district-level workshop on child rights issues was organised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), in collaboration with the district administration, in Ramanathapuram on Friday. The issue of corporal punishment and its long-term impact on children’s mental health and overall development, gaps and challenges in effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, were among the issues discussed during the sessions. The need to strengthen reporting and response mechanisms under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, was also discussed. Discussions during the workshop underscored the importance of prohibiting corporal punishment and mental harassment in schools, the NCPCR said in a social media post.
