The opening ceremony of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, will include a musical tribute to the state’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg, who recently passed away in tragic circumstances. The Assan Cricket Association (ACA) has also arranged for the distribution of 5,000 free tickets to Garg’s fans for the opening match between co-hosts India and Sri Lanka.
Prominent state artistes, such as Angarag Papon Mahanta and Joi Barua, as well as the Shillong Chamber Choir, will perform the tribute, according to news agency PTI, which quoted Assam Cricket Association (ACA) officials as saying. The musical tribute will be a 40-minute special presentation during the inaugural ceremony.
The Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) will distribute the free tickets on behalf of the ACA on Monday and will be available at the GSA office in Nehru Stadium, Guwahati, starting at 10 am, he added.
“To celebrate unity through sport and culture, and to encourage public participation in global sporting events, the GSA will distribute 5,000 free tickets to Zubeen Garg fans for the inaugural match,” an official stated.
Garg (52) passed away by drowning in the sea in Singapore on September 19, causing the entire state to mourn the loss of its beloved singer-composer. Garg was also known for his love of sports, particularly football, and participated in several friendly football and cricket matches.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia on September 21 confirmed that the board was planning a tribute in Garg’s memory.
“And as you all know, recently the youth icon, the musical icon of Assam or the cultural icon of Assam, Zubeen Garg has passed away. Today his mortal remains have arrived in Guwahati and it will be kept for one or two days for public homage and there’s a huge grief and tragic situation prevailing in Assam,” Saikia said on Sunday.
“So keeping in consonance with that situation and as a person who deserves some respect, Assam Cricket Association, maybe with BCCI, will have a tribute program at the time of opening (ceremony). So we are trying to have a Zubeen Garg tribute,” he added.
