A dog’s first day on the job as a livestock guardian didn’t quite go as planned—and internet viewers can’t get enough of it. A viral TikTok video shared to @karenannekoi shows a young Karakachan dog’s reaction to a raccoon approaching a chicken pen has racked up over 1 million views since being posted on November 5. The white-and-brown pup initially leapt into action, barking and running toward the intruder—but things took an unexpected turn when the raccoon charged back. Startled, the 6-month-old guardian bolted in the opposite direction as his owner could be heard behind the camera exclaiming, "No way!" Text over the clip reads: "When you get a livestock guardian dog to protect your flock but he’s never actually had to face off with a predator." The American Kennel Club (AKC) notes that, for thousands of years, humans have relied on canines in the fields, on farms, during hunts, and at home. Livestock guardian dogs, in particular, play a vital role in protecting animals like sheep, goats, and chickens—staying calm around the herd while bravely standing up to real threats. Viewers were left in stitches, with one user commenting, "And just like that my man lost his job," a remark that has earned more than 53,000 likes. The owner responded with a photo of the pup lying down innocently, captioned: "Bro thought his only job was to look cute, not actually work." "Because that’s not an LGD [livestock guardian dog]," one commenter wrote, prompting the owner to clarify: "He’s still a puppy learning." According to the American Karakachan Dog Association, the breed is one of Europe’s oldest, descending from ancient livestock guardians that once protected herds from wolves and bears. Known for their courage and loyalty, these dogs were bred to safeguard flocks and property—though, as this viral moment proves, even the best guardians start somewhere. The owner added in the caption that he had to bring in his Akita "to show how it’s done," reassuring viewers that "only his ego was bruised." The Akita, a powerful double-coated breed from Japan, is famed for its dignity, courage, and devotion. The AKC states it is traditionally regarded as a family protector and symbol of good health and fortune, the Akita stands 24 to 28 inches tall and carries a thick coat and curled tail. The breed is described as calm yet alert, they’re known for their loyalty and instinct to guard loved ones—qualities that made this particular Akita the perfect stand-in for the rookie Karakachan. This puppy’s viral debut may not have been flawless, but TikTok users agree: with a little more training, he’s bound to grow into his ancestral role.
