Woman, 80s, killed in horror collision in Roscommon as SUV driver is airlifted to hospital

A woman in her 80s has died following a collision involving a SUV and a truck in Roscommon this evening.

Gardaí have launched a witness appeal after the collision, involving a SUV and a truck, which occurred on the N5 at Scramoge in Roscommon shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

A passenger in the SUV, a female in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body was removed to the morgue where a postmortem examination will be arranged.

The driver of the SUV, a female in her 70s, was transferred by air ambulance to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The road is closed and expected to remain so until tomorrow pending an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Co. Roscommon today, Tuesday, 16 September”.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 4:45pm and 5:15pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
