Woman 'feels sick' after finding 'creature' in milk carton used for her toddlers' breakfast

A mum was left horrified after allegedly discovering a "slug" in the milk carton she and her young children had been drinking from. Beth Rees, 24, from Exeter, received a Tesco food delivery on October 17. She opened the milk carton the following Sunday and used it as usual, giving it to her young children. However, on Wednesday last week, Beth made a shocking discovery while preparing breakfast for her three-year-old and eight-month-old children. A slimy, slug-like creature, bloated from days in the milk, fell into the pan, she said. Recounting the grim find, Beth said: "Come Wednesday morning, I tipped a load [of milk] out into a pan to do [the children's] Weetabix with, and it just kind of came out and it was covered in thick slime." The mum told Devon Live : "I personally think it was a slug, but I think the colour of it went so funny from where it was sat in the milk, it had gone fat and bloated. It was awful, it was disgusting. I didn't eat for the rest of the day. It made me feel sick, so I threw the pan away. I washed it twice but couldn't bring myself to use it again." Beth and her partner were furious about finding the "creature" in their milk. Despite trying to contact Tesco, Beth claimed she had difficulties getting through. "I was angry because I'm not too fussy with me and my partner, but both my two children have been drinking from that since Sunday, and I felt really guilty," said Beth. "I contacted Tesco, I messaged them over WhatsApp and sent them the photo so they'd have proof. They weren't really very bothered, they said to take it into Tesco, but a few people I spoke to said they'd done that before and they'd been discarded. "I called Tesco this time, and they weren't very much help," Beth continued. "Tesco said they wouldn't be able to update me with what they were going to do; they said they'd do an inside investigation with the store, but I asked why I couldn't call back and find out what happened." The family received an offer of a voucher by way of apology, though Beth remained more troubled by the possibility of other shoppers discovering similar "creatures". "They offered us a £25 goodwill gesture coupon, but they wouldn't tell me what would happen next. I thought they would have asked for a recall on the item. "Nothing was being done about it. I wouldn't want anyone else to find that." Tesco informed Devon Live that they maintain rigorous checks on their milk throughout production and confirmed they would request the product be returned to the store. A Tesco spokesperson said: "We're sorry to hear about this. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure there are robust quality procedures in place, and milk is thoroughly checked throughout the production process, including multiple filtering stages. "In a situation like this, we always ask that the customer returns the product to store for a full refund and so our team can fully investigate the complaint."
