Bilston CofE primary school say they ‘pride themselves on their PE, sport and physical activity provision,’ and have set out to increase the number of teachers, parents and children cycling to and from school as part of their ‘School Bike Bus’ initiative.
The school also acquired six bikes free of charge from Wolverhampton City Council, and after ordering a set of protective helmets they have run bike-riding lessons for pupils since May.
In June 2025, the school enjoyed their most exciting cycling project, when a group of 24 pupils from the school’s ‘No Limits to Health’ were selected to visit the Velodrome at Derby Arena for a special cycling experience.
A spokesman from Bilston CofE primary school said: “The children had a fantastic time visiting the Velodrome and learning a new skill, but also showing perseverance to not give up even when it got tough.
“We also managed to meet Danielle Khan who was training there herself, and she is a Paralympic Velodrome Gold Medallist.
“After such an exciting and fantastic event, the cycling did not stop there. Our children at Bilston CofE were reminded with the date for the Kidical Mass on the 14th July. Six children attended this from our school and wore our own personalised T-Shirts.
“Well done to everyone involved.”
‘No Limits For Health’ is an organisation run by Sam Henry, who alongside colleague David Viner has been able to encourage staff, parents and pupils to cycle to school safely.
Bilston CofE say the scheme aims to “introduce a more physical way of getting to school, as well as learning the safety measures and Bike foundation skills children and adults may be unfamiliar with.”
They added: “It is also an ‘active’ start and end to each day, bringing lots of benefits to your physical and mental health.
“It also helps reduce your carbon footprint by saving on the emissions that would have been created if you’d used motorised transport.
“This was also an opportunity to get our children involved in the Wolverhampton Kidical Mass, by cycling from East Park to the Molineux.”
