I can’t begin to express how proud I am of our island athletes who are about to represent San Pedro and Belize at the upcoming Central American Games 2025 in Guatemala. It’s not every day that we see so much talent coming from our little island, and this year we’ll be cheering extra loud for four of our very own.
Among them is none other than former Miss San Pedro 2024, Alexa Acosta. From beauty queen to weightlifter, Alexa has shown us all that determination and discipline can take you far beyond the stage. She’ll be competing in weightlifting alongside Johann Marin, another strong representative from the island who has been a Crossfit athlete and trainer for some year now.
We also have Julio Bardalez, who will step up to the plate in softball. He has been involved in the sport since his San Pedro High School days of competition and national wins. Last but not least we have Kian Trejo, a seasoned triathlete and coach, ready to take on one of the toughest sporting events out there. Kian is currently president of the Belize Athletes Commission. “We’re a team of five athletes in the commission, at the moment,” commented Kian. “Our focus is to champion the voices and concerns of all Belizean athletes. This includes National team selection, sport development and the Olympic movement.”

When I spoke to Kian, he reminded me of the bigger picture: “The Central American Games is the first event in the new Olympic cycle. It starts here, then the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, and finally the Olympics.” Imagine that, our island athletes at the very start of a journey that could one day lead to the Olympic stage!
Central American Games in Guatemala
The Central American Games will run from October 18–30, 2025, across several Guatemalan cities including Guatemala City, Mazatenango, Quetzaltenango, and Izabal. Belize will be represented by about 140 athletes across 19 sporting disciplines, and knowing that four of them are from Ambergris Caye makes this moment extra special for us.
I also loved seeing the Central American Games Torch make its way through Belize this past weekend. It felt symbolic, the flame of unity and sportsmanship passing through our country before moving on to Guatemala, where athletes from across the region will come together.
So to Alexa, Johann, Julio, and Kian, your island family is behind you every step of the way. Shine bright, give it your all, and know that San Pedro, Belize is already so proud.
